Stars, the Heaven's Flock
St Clement Danes, Strand, London
Saturday 8 December, 7.30 pm
Saturday 8 December, 7.30 pm
"We stood on the hills, Lady,
Our day’s work done, Watching the frosted meadows That winter had won." At the coldest and darkest time of the year, we seek the consolation of poetry and music. Half-remembered words of mothers nursing babies, of shepherds seeing (and hearing) heavenly choirs, of oxen on their knees at midnight on Christmas Eve - all these sit somewhere in our subconscious and rise to the surface to soothe us when we hear them again. "This endris night I saw a sight, A maid a cradle keep, And ever she song and said among 'Lullay my child, lullow and sleep’.” Once again, the Fourth Choir will be celebrating the start of the Christmas season in the white-and-gold splendour of St Clement Danes in the Strand. Once again, a single voice will break the silence with Once in Royal David’s City. Once again, traditional carols will mingle with the less familiar, like the exquisite Heaven’s Flock by the hugely successful Latvian composer, Ēriks Ešenvalds. "Stars, you are the heavens’ flock, tangling your pale wool across the night sky…" Tickets online (with fee): £18 centre nave, £14 rear and side naves, £9 side benches Tickets also available from members of the choir without fee. On the door: £20 centre nave, £16 rear and side naves, £10 side benches Continuing a Fourth Choir tradition, tickets include a free glass of mulled cider or white wine and mince pies served at the interval. |
