Join Us
The Fourth Choir is a chamber choir for advanced singers. About half of our 50 members are former choral scholars, academy-trained musicians or music professionals, and half are experienced amateurs. We all read music and are also committed to putting in the additional personal study required to enable the choir to master difficult music at a fairly rapid pace.
We sing with about 36 members per concert, and as a chamber choir, with sometimes only four voices to each part, every voice is crucial to the sound. While every singer must pass high audition standards, the choir is supportive to help singers of different abilities develop their vocal technique and musicianship.

Rehearsals and commitmentWe rehearse from 7:00 to 9:30 on Thursday evenings near King's Cross and Angel.
We ask for a strong commitment, not only in terms of attendance, but also to mastering the music so that the choir can achieve its ambition to be competitive in the wider choral community. You will need to be able to attend weekly Thursday evening rehearsals, occasional weekend rehearsals, and be available for a range of performance opportunities throughout the year. You will also be encouraged to build awareness by attending concerts of leading London choirs. We want to make a mark on the choral scene, so there will be high expectations for enthusiasm and a willingness to help out on social and organisational tasks. |
Dates for joiningWe hope to resume rehearsals in May.
We have a few vacancies and hope to audition in June. Please submit your interest, and we will get in touch with you. |
Experience neededYou need to have extensive singing experience, including experience in chamber choirs. We do not rehearse with a piano, so you should be able to sight-read music at grade five or higher (examples can be provided). Most members have had vocal training, and the willingness to take musicianship or voice lessons may be a condition to your acceptance in the choir.
|
Cost of membershipThe choir is supported by voluntary donations, and we also ask for voluntary donations from members to cover rehearsal costs. However, we want all talented and willing singers to have the opportunity to join us, regardless of financial situation. Funding is available to those who need it to manage costs related to participating in our activities.

AuditionsAt the audition, you will be asked to sing two short pieces of your own choosing - one classical song from sheet music and one folk or hymn song. You'll then be asked to do some singing exercises to show your range, aural skills and music reading ability. (We recommend that you do not prepare a musical theatre-style song as the MD needs to hear your classical singing ability.)
